A community planting day at the Tarrant Family Farm - no experience required, only curiosity about what’s possible in your own life.
Come Put Your Hands in the Soil
September 19th | Registration $352nd Annual Planting Day
Most of us grew up somewhere far from the source of our food. We know the produce aisle. We don’t always know the hands, the soil, or the season that got it there.
Planting Day is a chance to close that distance - together.
The last time we did this, it rained. Twelve strangers kept planting anyway - mud on their shoes, kids pressing seeds into soil with their bare fingers, laughter under a patio roof. Nobody left early. By the end, nobody was a stranger anymore.
That’s the whole point. A garden doesn’t just grow food. It grows belonging.
What to Expect
This isn't a class. It's not a tour. It's not a workshop.
It's all three — woven into a single morning in a working, thriving foodscape.
You'll walk through a garden that produces 75% of a family's food from 1,200 square feet of suburban Phoenix yard. You'll see how it's designed, why each plant is where it is, what grows alongside what and why that matters. You'll understand — not just observe — a living food system in full production.
Then you'll become part of it.
You'll get your hands in the soil and plant. Real seeds, real beds, real food that will grow from what you put in the ground that morning. Along the way every question gets answered — about soil, spacing, companion planting, water, harvest, and what any of this could look like in your own backyard.
And because a garden is better shared, you'll do all of it alongside others who showed up for the same reason you did.
❋ A casual breakfast together — including food from the garden itself and gourmet coffee from the gourmet wife.
What the morning includes:
❋ The quiet realization that this is possible in your own yard.
❋ Hands-on planting with personal instruction on square foot gardening, companion planting, and seasonal timing.
❋ Real answers to your real gardening questions, on the spot.
❋ An immersive guided tour of a fully producing suburban foodscape.
❋ Kids welcome, encouraged, and free of charge - some of the best moments of the morning come from them!
